Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. (Matthew 6:31-33)
What are you seeking first? Are you seeking God’s kingdom first or yours? Many of us would have to say we’re not seeking God’s kingdom first in our lives. In some way we’re seeking to build our kingdom. Maybe what you’re seeking first is greater success in your career. Maybe for you it’s money you’re seeking. It may be that you’re seeking another person first: a spouse, a friend, a child. Some of us may even find ourselves seeking the necessities of life first. We put our work before our relationship with God because we have to put food on the table, clothes on our back, and a roof over our head.
The beautiful reality Scripture teaches us is not only that we shouldn’t seek other things before God, but that we don’t need to seek other things before him. God has promised that if we seek Him first, he’ll make sure we have everything we need!
I hope you believe that. Seek God first this year. He’s worth it!
