He Canceled Our Debt

And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its
legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him. – Colossians 2:13-15

This is glorious news after what we talked about last week! Because of our sin, we were spiritually dead. But God didn’t leave us that way! He brought a solution to our sin, and the wonderful thing is that it
doesn’t have anything to do with us.

Sometimes we think that in order to be saved we have to act a certain way, know certain things, or get our lives together. If we’ll do those things, then God will accept us and let us into heaven. This is how so many Christians view salvation.

But, Scripture is clear that salvation is an act of God, not something we earn by living the right way! Notice in the passage above that all the action is done by God. He made us alive, He forgave us, He canceled the record of our debt, He nailed it to the cross, He triumphed over the rulers and authorities. Our salvation
was accomplished by God’s mercy, grace, and love. Salvation is based on what God did, not on how we live. The only thing we have to do is accept the gift!
