In the middle of Matthew chapter 8 a scribe comes up to Jesus and tells him he’s ready to follow him wherever he goes. Jesus’ response was, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son
of Man has nowhere to lay his head” (v. 20). Another disciple asked Jesus to let him go and bury his father. Jesus responded, “Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their own dead” (v. 22).

I think Matthew records this little story to show us what it really looks like to follow Jesus. One thing that is abundantly clear in these verses is that following Jesus is difficult and at times uncomfortable.
Jesus himself didn’t live a life of comfort. He had nowhere to lay his head. And as his followers, we shouldn’t expect that following Jesus will be a comfortable experience either. So many people have bought
the lie that once you start following Jesus, life will just be smooth sailing. It isn’t true, following Jesus is difficult.

This story also shows us that those who truly follow Jesus make him priority number one in their lives. According to what Jesus said here, his followers are to prioritize following him even before family
obligations. Unfortunately, so many of us think of following Jesus as something else, something less. Following him, for some, means going to church every week. Or it means following a certain list of
dos and don’ts. But, if we’re really following him, it’s more than that. If we’re following Jesus, we’ll put him first over everything else!
