Preacher's Corner
Meet Our Preacher
In January, 2005, Belmont Church of Christ welcomed Dr. John R. Wood, accompanied by his wife, Diana, as our new minister. John joins us from California, and brings an extensive and varied list of accomplishments, including academic leadership, military service, missionary work, and ministry experience.
John was born and raised in the churches of Christ and has worked within the congregations since 1968. He holds degrees in Psychology, with a Bible minor (B.A.), a Masters of Arts in Counseling and a Masters degree in Theology. In 1987, John earned his doctorate from Pacific School of Religion, in the field of Ministry to Ministers (D. Min.)
In the United States Air Force, John served as Church of Christ Chaplain from 1973-1993. He served as a NATO advisor on religion, ethics, and quality of life for American and British communities. John was active in Operation Provide Comfort, which assisted refugees from Iraq. He was decorated for his work with wounded marines in Beruit and he received specialized training in hospital and crisis ministry. He personally ministered to a bone marrow unit, cancer patients, neurology wards, AIDS/HIV and neonatal wards at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center.
As a missionary in the military, John spent a year in Thailand and three years in Germany, working as a circuit-riding minister in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East, and two years in Turkey where he and his family lived in the heartland of Biblical history. He retired from the Air Force in 1993.
John is the father of three children. He believes in the importance of family and the leadership of our young people. John, Diana, and their family enjoy photography, camping, target shooting, scuba diving, and laughing together.
